CrossFit is not for everyone. There. I said it. Damn… what a relief that
is.
While every single workout we do is infinitely scalable to even the lowest of
fitness levels (I can talk about that, I‘ve been there) that does NOT mean
CrossFit is for everyone. Sure, anyone and everyone CAN do it. That doesn’t
mean they should.
CrossFit is about high intensity, functional movements. It’s about getting
better, every day. It’s about showing up and giving everything you’ve got.
It’s NOT about just showing up. While that can be a tough battle on it’s own,
you’re only halfway to the finish line.
So many people are wanting that quick reward. They want to find that magic
formula so they can lose weight or get stronger or what-the-hell-ever their
fitness goal is. Personally, I think CrossFit has found a magic formula for all
of these goals… However, “being present” isn’t the only variable.
You have to put in the work. And it’s not always easy.
Your time at the box should be fun, I‘m not saying it shouldn‘t. Hopefully
it’s one of the most fun things you do all day, and you go home and can’t wait
to come back and get your ass kicked again the next day. But that doesn’t mean
it’s social go-go happy hour. This isn’t (insert name of globo gym here that
kicks you out if you work too hard). You have a coach there who’s trying to
teach you. Who WANTS to teach you and watch you get better. There's a time
for talking, and a time for listening to your coach, and they're never at the
same time.
But you still have to listen. You have to WANT to get better. You have
to have the right attitude. You aren’t going to do your 1st
or 10th or 100th clean and jerk and have it look like Chad Vaughn’s. It
doesn’t happen that way. You’ll probably look more like someone in one of those
Gym Fail videos you share and laugh at than you’d ever admit. It takes
dedication, and it takes focus. It takes a willingness to learn and be coached
and listen, and you have to know that you have room for improvement.
If you’re just showing up and going through the motions… You’re wasting your
time and your coaches, as well as every other athlete in your class who COULD’VE
benefited from the extra time your coach just wasted on you. If you don’t care
to learn and get better and PUSH YOURSELF, both mentally and physically, you’re
taking away from everyone else in that class who does. We can tell when you’re
really putting in the effort but having troubles as opposed to half-assed going
through the motions.
Show up ready to work. Physically. Mentally. Have a good attitude. Your
coach is trying to help you….. Let them. Listen. Don’t just hear what they’re
saying… Listen. If you’re looking for a shortcut to fitness, there’s only one…
It’s called “Hard Work.”
A good attendance record at your local CrossFit box isn’t going to get you in
shape. And you’re going to spend a lot of money learning that lesson.
If you don’t want to put the “Hard Work” in, I know plenty of places that
have open ellipticals that you can hop on.
When you show up, make sure you’re ready to LEARN, GET BETTER, and WORK HARD.
If you don’t want to learn or improve…. Then get out of the way of those of
us who do.
